When buying an SD card you need the right type, speed class and capacity for your device. Below is a helpful guide for finding the right memory card.

Capacity:

In general bigger is better when it comes to capacity however this can depend on the limitation of your device & type of files you are working with. Also some people prefer to purchase several lower capacity cards over a single large capacity card in case of a card failure or data corruption.

Card Speed Class:

There are four standard speed classes (2, 4, 6 & 10). 10 is the fastest, while 2 is the slowest. Class 2 is suitable for standard definition recording. Class 4 and 6 cards are suitable for high-definition video recording while speed class 10 is suitable for full HD video recording.

There is also UHS Speed Class (Ultra High Speed) which is currently the fastest speed class on the market today. UHS 1 (U1) will have a minimum read/write speed of 10MB/s and is recommended for 2K video recording. UHS 3 (U3) has a minimum speed of 30MB/s and is designed for 4K video recording. Faster card speeds improve performance during HD and 4K video and RAW and high-resolution image recording. Your device will need to support the speed class of your selected memory card.

Card Types:

The original SD card format had a maximum capacity of 2GB. SDHC cards were the first additional format which supported up to 32GB capacity. SDXC is a more recent addition that allows card capacity to range from 32GB upwards. Your device will need to support SDHC or SDXC to be compatible. At this point in time most new devices should support these formats.
